Medical and Drug Information

Inherited Disorders and Genetics

University of Cambridge Database
This web site contains a guide to diseases/conditions of pure bred dogs which are likely to be transmitted wholly or partly through a genetic mechanism.

Genetic and Hereditary Conditions of Cats
This web page contains a list of cat breeds and the genetic or hereditary conditions which have been reported in that breed. A brief description of the diseases and references to published papers can be found on the genetic and hereditary diseases of cats web page. Please note that these pages are intended for veterinary surgeons and that technical terminology is used throughout, with no translation for the lay person.

Genetic Welfare Problems
In order to help towards improvements in breed-related welfare problems in companion animals, UFAW has started this website to provide information for prospective pet owners, breeders and others. The idea is that if you are thinking of buying a dog, cat, rabbit or any other other companion animal of a particular strain or breed, you will be able to find information on what inherited welfare problems may occur, and what checks you may need to make with breeders or suppliers in order to avoid buying affected or carrier animals and, in so doing, unintentionally perpetuating the problem.

Dog Training Textbook
Dogs will be dogs. They are guaranteed to pee, poop, chew, dig, bark and bite. So if you invite a dog to live in your home, it is up to you to teach them where, when and how.

Raising a puppy can be a wonderfully enjoyable, or horribly frustrating experience, depending on what you know. We believe that proper dog training information is so important that it should be freely available to all, with the hope that dogs (and their humans) will be happier and healthier because of it. This is why we have created the:

The Dog Star Daily Online Digital Dog Training Textbook

It is our hope that many owners will read this information before they get their puppy, so that they will be fully prepared when they bring their pup home. If you are thinking about getting a puppy, we suggest starting at the beginning with Chapter One: BEFORE You Get Your Puppy. However, if you already have a puppy or dog, you can go immediately to the age-relevant section for your pet. If you not only have a dog, but also have a specific behavior problem, you can go immediately to Chapter Six: Dog Behavior Problems for help
