The extra time we offer is a reflection of our level of service and the need to offer your pet the best possible when it's ill and needs diagnosis. We like to be thorough and have time to listen.

Annual health assessment and vaccination
Vaccination is so much more than an injection. It's an opportunity to carefully assess the individual needs of your pet and make sure there are no underlying problems that might affect the quality of life and longevity of your pet. Even without vaccination we recommend annual health assessments.

Full range of surgery and medicine services
Our practice offers access to all the services you would expect at a Veterinary Hospital. We are able to provide a complete range of surgical and medical procedures including dermatology, cardiology, medicine, diagnostic imaging, cytology, clinical pathology, soft tissue surgery and orthopaedic surgery. We have visiting specialists in ophthalmology, cardiology, ultrasonography and orthopeadics. We hospitalise patients with serious illness and monitor them day and night according to their individual needs. We put the patient first and will refer patients if required rather than "have a go" ourselves.
In most instances we can offer you all the care your pet needs at our main hospital. We offer critical patients 24hr ICU care at Vets Now, the only Veterinary Hospital in Swindon with a veterinary
surgeon and veterinary nurse on site 24 hours a day monitoring your pet.

The lastest digital x-ray and ultrasound equipment
With the latest digital technology we achieve a much higher percentage of diagnostic images on the first attempt, this is safer for patients, safer for our staff, and we are not left with environmentally damaging waste chemicals. The latest technology allows a far greater range of detail to be seen from a single x-ray and this improves our chances of making a diagnosis. We are proud to be one of the first practices to offer this service for patients in Swindon and it reflects our commitment to offering you the best.

Cytology Service (same day microscope examination of lumps)
No vet can tell just by feeling a lump what it might be. We can take an educated guess, but if you want to know if a lump is cancer or not we can tell you, usually the same day. A thin needle is used to collect a sample and then examined by us under the microscope. Some lumps fall into a grey area and need further testing but most can be identified as cancer or not and a proper assessment made.

Out of hours emergency and critical care service
We offer 24 hour emergency cover 7 days a week and 365 days a year. During opening hours we see emergencies immediately and after hours we use a dedicated veterinary emergency service. There are major benefits for you and your pet when using Vets Now Emergency Service.
- The only Veterinary Hospital in Swindon with a Veterinary Surgeon on site all night waiting for emergencies and managing critical care patients, supported by qualified veterinary nurses.
- Don't worry about disturbing them as they are not asleep but waiting for your call at any time.
- The service can contact us at any time should they need to.
(Other Veterinary Hospitals have either qualified or unqualified nurses who are required to sleep on site and attend patients as needed. Veterinary surgeons having to work the next day are asleep at home overnight attending the surgery if called in. This is the similar to the service we offer our inpatients, except those which are critical are transferred to Vets Now for constant veterinary supervision)

Comprehensive blood testing laboratory on site
We have invested in the best in-practice blood analysers available and can have results back within 20 minutes of taking a blood sample. Using external laboratories is sometimes required for special tests.

Hospitalisation in spacious, warm and quiet wards
Our patient wards are designed for comfort and low stress. Cats are hospitalised in a sound proofed, air conditioned ward and kept away from noisy dogs (important if you are a cat, less so if you are a dog). The dog ward has a variety of kennel sizes including walk in kennels. The isolation ward is used to keep animals with dangerous diseases away from other patients. All wards have a CCTV system that allow the patients to be monitored remotely when they do not have direct supervision (we can't have someone next to your pets bedside 24/7). We can even monitor them from home at night to be sure nothing has happened that might be a concern.

Monthly Ophthalmology Referral Service (eye clinic)
The ophthalmology service is run by Ida Gilbert BVSc CertVOphthal MRCVS. Ida has worked at Purton Vets for many years. She gained her Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Certificate in Veterinary Ophthalmology in 2001 and provides both internal and external referrals.
“My aim is to provide excellent medical and surgical care for my patients, whilst maintaining close relationships with both the client and the referring veterinarian.”
REFERRALS: Ida runs the eye clinic at our Purton Surgery on a Friday from 10am - 1pm. The clinic is run on a referral only basis. Vets Click here for further information
The first consultation will take 40-60 minutes and most follow-up consultations about 20 minutes. Ida will first discuss with you the current eye problem or eye-related concern as well as any other medical conditions you may be aware of and any previous treatments you may have tried. A thorough ophthalmic examination will then be performed, using a range of different tests and specialised ophthalmic equipment (see Diagnostic procedures). Ida will explain any relevant findings with you at the end of the examination and discuss the implications or surgical choices available as thoroughly as possible.
It is a good idea to not feed your pet for 6-8 hours before the first consultation, in case sedation or anaesthesia should be required for further investigations or surgery. Your pet can have free access to water. Please bring with you any current medication that you have for your pet.

Microchip Identification (with built in thermometer)
Our microchips are
high quality and include a built in thermometer so we can tell your
pets temperature by scanning them rather than by using a rectal
thermometer. Studies have shown the microchips are a more accurate way
of assessing body temperature. We believe our patients will benefit in the long run with a kinder
approach to taking their temperature.
