Dog Walks

We all have our favourite dog walks built up over the years through self-discovery and suggestion. We would like to share these places with all the community and would love to hear from you with your own favourites. Send us an email with your suggestion and including a map would be really helpful. Its so difficult to know if a walk is going to be dog friendly or not from an ordinance survey map.  The maps provided are interactive, you can move them, zoom in and out and open them to view in a larger window.

nr Hayes Knoll Farm

A circular walk near Hayes Knoll farm between Purton and Cricklade.  The walk takes you through medieval ridge and furrow hay meadows along the River Ray, where you may catch sight of a kingfisher and then back through colourful wildflower meadows, where an abundance of flowers including black knapweed, ex-eye daisy, and lady's bedstraw can be seen.  At least in late spring and summer that is.

Purton Village - For the energetic!

I see Mr Taparek walking his dogs every day come rain or sunshine.  I'm always impressed by the distance he covers and he has probably walked every right of way there is in the village.  This map shows some of the rights of way that dogs may enjoy.

Purton Village - Church End

An easy walk that takes you around the south edge of the village with many areas suitable for off lead exercise. No sheep, but sometimes cattle graze the fields.

Purton Village - Ringsbury Camp

A pleasant walk through water meadows, the western edge of the walk being a bit wet (take your wellington boots).

Purton Village - East of Station Road

A circular walk east of station road to The Pry and back or via Quarry Farm.

Cricklade Village - North Meadow

Cricklade is lucky to have some lovely meadows for walking dogs.  This map shows areas that are open and allow for a bit of exercise.

Pond St, Haydon Wick, Swindon

An open area in the centre of Swindon to let your dog off lead for a good run.

Waterhay - time for a swim

If your dog likes water and can swim then the gravel pits can be fun. Beware some areas are not as safe as others for swimming so respect the warning signs on the fences.

Kingsdown Rd, Near Crematorium, West Swindon

A large open area for off lead exercise.

Barbury Castle Counrty Park and surrounds

A bit of a drive from Purton but well worth the trip on a nice day. There can be sheep on the castle from late autumn to early spring.  And I will try warn you here if they are present, which they are at present.  Great panoramic views.

The Ridgeway

The ridgeway is a fine walk.  It's great for off lead exercise and the most you might have to contend with is off road vehicles and the occasional dog phobic walker.
